Change

There seems to be so much change in the air.

I network a lot and I’m hearing people express a need to make BIG moves in their lives. Not just change jobs, but change complete industries from where they are now. Entrepreneurs talking about moving from what they’ve been doing and try something completely new. In all these conversations, none of them really know exactly what they want to do. They just know they need change. Wow!!

When I hear this, I automatically think, “they need to create a vision board.” Because I’ve facilitated so many vision boards sessions for people, I have this crazy belief that a vision board is the solution to everything. Why? Because when you create it from a place of authenticity, it clears up any uncertain thoughts. When I facilitate a vision board session, we work for at least an hour on getting quiet and dropping below the surface of everyday life. We work to reach what you authentically want in life.

You see, vision boards aren’t just about slapping a bunch of pictures on a poster board. Yes, you can certainly place that car and house and pictures of dollar bills on a big piece of paper and that’s still called a vision board. It will keep you focused on the items you place there as long as the board is where you look at it all the time.

But, most of the time we want more than surface/material things. If we take the time to get quiet and go below the surface of our everyday life, we may perhaps find what we really want is less to do on the weekend, to read more books or to grow a garden….all of which have nothing to do with material things.

This is why I believe so strongly in my vision board process. Just today, I had coffee with my good friend Tony Ruiz. He shared that the board he created a little over a year ago is now outdated because he has accomplished all the items on it….none of which had anything to do with buying things. My Business Bestie, Edie Tolbert, has two vision boards. The second is the result of the first one being outdated. She’s accomplished all of the items on the first one.

I love and believe in the vision board process for several reasons.

First, I’ve seen it work.

Second, I believe that we are all here at this time in history with unique gifts and talents placed within us to fulfill something only we can accomplish. I believe this with all my heart. And I believe that having a vision board created through the process I use will help you accomplish that thing you’re here to do.

And thirdly, there’s scripture!

Habakkuk 2:1-3:

What’s God going to say to my questions? I’m braced for the worst.
I’ll climb to the lookout tower and scan the horizon.
I’ll wait to see what God says,
how he’ll answer my complaint.
And then God answered: “Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
pointing to what’s coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
And it doesn’t lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
It’s on its way. It will come right on time.

I see vision boards as a modern-day version of this scripture. We first have to go to the lookout tower to scan the horizon and WAIT to see what God says. This is why I spend an hour at the beginning facilitating some basic relaxation and separating my clients from the stress of their day. Once the mind chatter stops, we can hear from God. His ‘still small voice’ can be heard once our mind settles down and gets quiet. But this can’t happen unless you’re intentional. It requires setting aside time. Most people tell me they love this part so much because for them to attempt this level of relaxation alone, is nearly impossible.

After this time of quiet introspection, we then move on with the vision board process. I have plentiful images, words and phrases from which to choose. This is typically everyone’s favorite part. Finding those items which resonate is an eye-opening process. We use these items to create your board. We then do some analysis of your board so you can walk away with a plan.

The entire process from beginning to end is about finding clarity. This is why I said earlier that I believe vision boards are the solution to everything. Once clarity is found, we can solve whatever issue is nagging at us and begin making plans.

Not only does this work for individuals, but it works for teams. I’ve facilitated groups creating one board to bring clarity around a business. Managers have used this process as a team building exercise and allowed each staff member to create a board and then discuss them. The options are endless and to date, I’ve facilitated vision board workshops for over 150 people.

I hope you don’t mind that I took this blog to describe what I do. With so much discussion about change without a clear view of what they want, I thought maybe this process would serve others as well.
